Romantic river cruises
Amsterdam tourism: Everybody, young or old enjoys river cruises. There are several places in Amsterdam where you can go on board. Across central station there is a big dock, with several options.
You choose different tours through different canals. Ask the captains wich one gives you the best sightseeing. Everybody in
Amsterdam speaks very good English. The guides in the boats give their explaination in usually three or four languages.
Another great thing to do is to take a canal cruise by night. All the bridges and canalhouses are lovely illuminated. You can even have dinner on a canalboat in the evening. If that isn't romantic...???
All the canals are very pretty, but the most important ones are the Keizersgracht and the Herengracht. When you take a good look at the houses, you will see the panels in the top, with the pulleys. In the golden age they were used to hoist the merchandise up into the houses. Most of the merchandise came from the Dutch colonies. An Amsterdam cruise is also good for catching up your knowledge of worldhistory.
What's also conspicious are the form of the houses. If you look closely, you will see the variety of the gables. The most common are the ones with corbie-steps. In Dutch we say trapgevel.
The bridges also have very interesting architecture. There are almost 1300 bridges. Most of them illuminated in the evening. In the Reguliersgracht there are seven brideges close to each other. Very beautiful.
The most famous bridge is the Magere brug(skinny bridge) across the river Amstel. The most decorated one is the Blauwbrug(blue bridge), also across the Amstelriver.
