For the younger people among us, a hostel is a good accomodation. It's cheap and you meet other young people from all over the world. Often you have to share a room with others. Usually they give you a locker for your belongings. A hostel is also good for families with older children. Sometimes they have family-rooms. If your looking for a small and cosy place to stay. A bed and breakfast is a good option. House-owners created a place to sleep for tourists and they take care of your breakfast. It's not expensive and more personal accomodation than a hotel. The owners are often very helpfull to you when you're planning your day in the city. 
You can also rent an apartment in the city. You rent an Amsterdam apartment usually for a longer period. At least a week. There is not so much supply in Amsterdam. If you want something very special, you can stay on a sleeping-ship(slaapboot in Dutch). It's a little like a hostel on a boat. It's very romantic to sleep on the water in Amsterdam. Imagine waking up and the first thing you see are the beautiful canals and the picturesque houses. Also very suitable for groups. If you want a boat of your own to stay on. You can rent a real houseboat. In the Amsterdam canals you find hundreds of them. It's very Amsterdamlike to sleep there. Many Dutch celebs own a houseboat of their own.
