Carre
The family Carré performed in the Netherlands for the first time in September 1863. They did a horse-act on the annual fair of Amsterdam. Three years later Wilhelm Carré got temporarly permission to build a small wooden circus, where they could show their acts. In 1874 Carré got permission to build a bigger and a more beautiful circus building, with a 14 meters cross-cut arena, a heated vestibule and lovely anterooms. But even this was after five years to small and they moved for the last time to its final destination Binnen-Amstel 125. Nowadays it is a quality theatre with big artists.
In Holland the biggest theatre in the city is always called the "schouwburg".
The first schouwburg in Amsterdam was build in 1638. It was a wooden building on the keizersgracht. Today the Schouwburg of Amsterdam is situated on Leidseplein 26.
The Kleine Komedie is the oldest Amsterdam theatre. It was build as a French theatre in The Napoleonistic time. Napoleon and king Willem 1 where frequent visitors. today it still is a well known national theatre. Amstel 56-58

Theater Bellevue: modern theatre
Leidsekade 90. This building was build in 1840. It was split into a part for men and one for women. Nowadays it is a modern theatres with national and international artists.
The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre presents a unique form of music theatre: the European tradition of the classical marionette theatre. Wooden actors, in their silk and velvet costumes, present opera's by Offenbach and Mozart. Six puppeteers manipulate the large marionettes. You'll find this Amsterdam theatre on Nieuwe Jonkerstraat 8
